I got a chance to go to a Demonios da Garoa show last weekend. Not knowing who they were, this didn't mean much to me before I went. They're a samba band from Sao Paulo that have been together since the 1940s! Yes, the 1940s! Obviously they've had some personnel change over the years, but I think three of the original members are still in the band and travel to play shows. So, this would make them over 80. I didn't know this until after I saw the show and I couldn't believe it. I guess it's true what they say about working and doing things you enjoy after the traditional "retirement age"...it keeps you young.
Some of the professors from the university and me about to enjoy the show...
A little sample for your enjoyment.
Demonios da Garoa-Trem das onze (tried to upload the actual video to the blog, but my limited blogging abilities didn't allow it. Check out this link, though! GREAT music!)
it's funny named Demonios da Garoa as samba because it's so mixed of sounds. My father used to listen to them a lot and I still listen despite of they never change their way to sing or their songs (I really don't know if they have own music or just are interpreters), but it's really good and shows us the real old Brazil!
